City Government of Montezuma

20170523_151410The City of Montezuma has a Mayor-Council form of government. The City Council consists of five Council Members, elected for four-year terms. The Mayor is elected at large for a four-year term. 

The Mayor is not a member of the City Council and does not vote as a member of the City Council.  The City Council, Mayor, and city officers have such powers and shall perform such duties as are authorized by State law and by the ordinances, resolutions, rules, and regulations of the city.  

The City Clerk is responsible for ordinances, resolutions, minutes, and the City Code. The office publishes notices, ordinances, and minutes and assists staff and the public in researching information.  

The City of Montezuma's fiscal year begins July 1 and ends June 30.  The director of finance prepares a budget under the direction of the Council in conjunction with the department superintendents.  The budget process begins in October of each year and certification must be completed by March.  The director of finance also files an Annual Financial Report, Street Financial Report and Debt Report each year with the State of Iowa.
