Local Barn Quilts

IMG_0002-150x150The first barn quilt in Poweshiek County is located at the farm of Phil and Lois Evans. There are 13 Barn Quilts that adorn historic barns throughout the Poweshiek County area, with other quilts in the design and implementation process.  The double pinwheel quilt design was by Evans’ daughter-in-law and was a gift from their children.  The Evans’ farm and barn quilt is located 2 miles southeast of Montezuma along the Barnes City Highway.   MAP

Barn Quilting History

IMG_0001-150x150The barn quilt art was fostered in Sac and Grundy Counties in Iowa in 2005, and quickly spread throughout the state, including the Evan’s farm quilt that was installed in 2008.  Iowa barn quilt squares are generally 8×8 foot wood pieces painted with a traditional quilt pattern that reflect symbols of a community’s past heritage and future.
